JEFF FASANO

Behind the Photos

MARTY STUART

Veteran photographer Jeff Fasano has only 3 days left with his Kickstarter campaign—to publish his first fine-art book: AMERICANA PORTRAIT SESSIONS.

For a $100 pledge, you can choose to get an autographed copy of his book and a choice of a signed B&W Silver Gelatin Print (one of six B&W photos). There are also options for one of three Color Fine Art Pigment Photo Prints. Today, we feature the back story of one of the prints.

Marty Stuart & the Fabulous Superlatives

We talked with Jeff Fasano about his portrait of MARTY STUART:

It was my first New Year’s Eve in Nashville and Marty was playing City Winery to close out the year. It was a fun shoot and those are three heavy duty players in his band, The Fabulous Superlatives.

We set up to do those portrait sessions, and you could tell I wasn’t lighting things at that time. I was shooting with available light—from those fluorescent lights in the ceiling of the City Winery green room. I got some great shots shooting that way, which is what Jim Marshall used to do.

I had Jim Marshall in my head. If you look at his books, that’s the kind of photographs he created. He didn’t have any lights—he just shot whatever was there, with available light.

It’s a tiny room and we got the whole band in there with Marty. When you open up 24 mm, you’re able to get everybody. What’s fun now is that I always see three of those guys from the Fabulous Superlatives all around town, a lot. Kenny Vaughan, with the hat, is a really cool guy and he always remembers me when I see him—and it’s all from the friendship we developed during that photo shoot.

I had never seen Marty Stuart perform live before that photo shoot. And that night, the music blew me away. What was even more impressive was Marty playing his mandolin—and how good he is on that instrument. It was like nothing I’ve heard before. I’m friends with some of the top mandolin players like Sam Bush, who is also a truly incredible fiddle player. But Marty Stuart is on that level—he’s a world class mandolin player. He just blew me away that night. He was really good and that was an all-around great night.
