We talked with Jeff Fasano about his portrait of Chris & Rich Robinson (of The Black Crowes):
It was a short photo session but it was fun. In that photo, Chris was on his phone and was playing some punk band. I asked him who it was. Then he said, “Were you into all that stuff?” And I said “I was at CBGB’s in 1977”—because I’m older than them. I experienced CBGB back in the 70s. I was there in the second wave when the Dead Boys were there. He got all excited. He said, “Oh wow—what I would have given to be there at that time.” We started a conversation about different kinds of music. They were great to photograph.
What I remember the most is seeing how Rich was really quiet and doesn’t talk much. Chris just doesn’t stop and his energy is always moving.
That was shot at the Basement East, about four days before the tornado ripped through East Nashville and destroyed that place. But miraculously, it didn’t destroy that dressing room! Tornadoes are so unpredictable. It got a big chunk of that venue—it sliced through the middle and the roof, but the dressing room was not destroyed. I was shooting for Guitar Player magazine and those lights were in that dressing room. Four days later, that place changed forever.
