JEFF FASANO

Behind the Photos

JEWEL

Veteran photographer Jeff Fasano has 7 days to go for his Kickstarter campaign—to publish his first fine-art book: AMERICANA PORTRAIT SESSIONS.

For a $100 pledge, you can choose to get an autographed copy of his book and a choice of a signed B&W Silver Gelatin Print of one of 6 B&W photos. There are also options for one of 3 Color Fine Art Pigment Photo Prints. Today, we feature the back story of one of the prints.

We talked with Jeff Fasano about his portrait of JEWEL:

I remember her walking down from City Winery in shorts and cowboy boots saying “Hey, you must be Jeff Fasano.” Jewel’s an actor too and she told me, “I always wanted to do a shot like an Audrey Hepburn photo.” From that I figured she wanted those old 40s and 50s B&W shots, and I said, “Go for it.” That’s when she looked up—and that the shot where she’s standing. She looked and me and said, I always wanted to do that.” And that’s what got me the gig at City Winery where I continue to do portrait sessions backstage before City Winery performances.

After we did that shot, she wanted to keep on going. That’s the year she opened AmericanaFest, and City Winery was her first night. I got a chance to see her show and it was a packed audience. I was able to see firsthand how Jewel draws you in because she’s so amazingly authentic and real.

After her show, I went back to her dressing room and she was sitting there. I noticed that she was all by herself. Artists sometimes have a difficult time with the music business and you can see it. I immediately remembered what Lisa Marie Presley said to me where she had a tough time with music business people. All of these people were in her dressing room—and she’s all by herself, looking at all these people. I walked over to her and said, “Everything you talk about and say comes from your heart—and that’s why people love you. That’s why I always wanted to meet you. Even when you talked about the extensions in your hair—you made people laugh—and it’s real. You are authentic—it’s in your heart and it comes through in your show.”

To pledge your support, you can now pre-order this first comprehensive photography book of the Artists of Americana Music via his Kickstarter project. Many of these portraits were photographed at AmericanaFest in Nashville.
