A look back at five years of amazing artists, stunning photographs and unforgettable stories
THE EDITOR
Five years ago, the nation was engulfed in a devastating recession, the music industry was embroiled in turbulent transformation, and print media was devolving at an alarming rate. It was hardly the ideal time to launch a music publication. But we did just that with resolve, passion and no small measure of gambling spirit. With this issue, we celebrate a very special milestone: our fifth anniversary.
Our editorial team combed tirelessly through nearly a thousand features and profiles, pulling together the biggest stars, most compelling stories and eye-catching photos of the past five years. Selecting favorites was no easy task, and this issue spotlights music’s best—from Buddy Guy to Adele, Merle Haggard to Taylor Swift, Ozzy Osbourne to Jack White, Tom Petty to Wiz Khalifa, Branford Marsalis to Gregg Allman, and so many more. We also highlight insightful special features that tackled topics like the limitations of studio technology, the joyful rebirth of vinyl records, and the misery behind the making of some of rock’s iconic albums.
Meanwhile we showcase the stunning work of a wide range of master lensmen, including our very own contributing photographers Norman Seeff and Henry Diltz, who’ve captured the souls of music’s finest.
We’re honored that you’ve joined us for this very special anniversary, and offer this commemorative edition as a thank-you for making M Music & Musicians so successful. We raise a glass to the terrific five years behind us—and the next five ahead!
