As a teenager, J Rand groomed himself for the spotlight by singing Michael Jackson songs at a local karaoke bar in his hometown. “When I was a kid I was always fascinated by entertainers,” he says. While pursuing a solo career, he performed with various local cover bands. In 2010, Rand signed with Interscope Records and collaborated with some major hip-hop acts including Akon (“Oo La La”) and T-Pain (“Can’t Sleep”). He also landed roles in the films Spring Breakers and Rock of Ages, and TV’s Burn Notice. Along the way, he accumulated 5 million YouTube views and 66,000 Twitter followers. After splitting with Interscope, Rand re-emerged last fall performing his new single, “Ride,” with Flo Rida and T-Pain on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Rand, 26, is currently recording his debut album, which he describes as “modern, fresh pop and R&B.” The record is due out later this year on Flo Rida’s label Poe Boy Music Group.
