Travellers in Space and Time should put a stop to all those press clippings that associate the Apples with the early-’60s California sound. Sure, Robert Schneider still has that sunny voice that would make any Grandma want to pinch his cheeks for all eternity. But this is the Archies meets ELO meets Saturday Night Fever—in short, the most ass-shaking thing the band has ever done. Travellers is a reminder of a time when dance music wasn’t guided by assaultive “thump-thump” bass lines, and when hooking up with a complete stranger after a night at a club posed a much smaller risk to your health. If there’s a point to the title and some of the space-age production values, you won’t catch it. You’ll be too busy moving your feet and trying not to bump into the furniture. – DS
