Magnetic

[Warner Bros.]

Last time out, on 2010’s Something for the Rest of Us, the Goo Goo Dolls went deep, singing about paralyzed war veterans, the plight of the 99 percent and other bummer subjects far removed from the misunderstood soul who pined for true love in “Iris.” For their 10th album, Magnetic, frontman John Rzeznik returns to familiar territory, penning inspirational tunes with titles like “Bulletproof Angel.” Four producers—whose credits range from Bon Jovi and Green Day to Katy Perry and Train—coat Magnetic in a slick Top 40 sheen that makes it consistently pop from the speakers. Songs like the album’s opener “Rebel Beat,” “When the World Breaks Your Heart” and “Caught in the Storm” brim with big, buoyant hooks and empty sentiments. It’s basically the Goo Goo Dolls on autopilot, doubling back after the misstep of the burden-heavy Something for the Rest of Us. Thankfully, there’s nothing deep about it. –Michael Gallucci
