Light Up Gold

Why did three-fourths of this band’s lineup move to New York City from the Lone Star State? “As for Texas, donuts only,” frontman Andrew Savage sings on the aptly named “Donuts Only.” “You cannot find bagels here.” As their debut album makes clear, they didn’t just come for the baked goods. Light Up Gold is the work of wordy young strummers obsessed with Gotham greats the Ramones, the Strokes and perhaps even the Velvet Underground—the main inspiration for their primary influence, Jonathan Richman. Whereas Richman is clever in a plainspoken sort of way, though, Savage spits free-association lines like the overstimulated, underfocused, Google-age buckaroo he is. We’ve heard it all before—just not quite like this.
