ARRICA ROSE & THE …’S

Let Alone Sea

In Southern California, Stevie Nicks is a goddess and Depeche Mode are conquering heroes. Arrica Rose isn’t yet on their level, but the San Fernando Valley native is very much of their kind—an enigmatic enchantress adept at blending classic folk-rock songwriting and dark, dreamy atmospherics. She’s got a song called “Summer’s Gonna Burn Me (So Are You),” and that title sums up the mood of her third album. Whether hopeful or heartbroken, Rose sings with breathy, quivering drama, evoking Chan Marshall. And like Marshall she’s got soul—for all of her gloomy-cool posturing, she’s great on “Pot of Gold,” where down-home horns warm the chilly guitars and reinforce Rose’s chorus: “You will walk in the sunshine again.”
