The Last Place

The latest in a long line of inexplicably underappreciated power-pop bands (see also Big Star, the Flamin’ Groovies and the Nerves), Army Navy debuted with one of the best albums of 2008. All sparkling guitar and infectious melody, that self-titled effort should have been a million-seller. Here’s hoping the band scores big with The Last Place, which picks up right where its predecessor left off. Frontman Justin Kennedy once played in a group with Ben Gibbard, and while he shares the Death Cab for Cutie singer’s penchant for cleverly articulating heartache, he never wallows or lets his tunes drag. Army Navy adheres to the power-pop credo: Take your licks but keep the hooks coming.
