ERIC JOHNSON

Up Close

[Vortexan Music]

While it’s been 20 years since Eric Johnson had his closest brush with fame with the landmark Ah Via Musicom, the joyful noise that is his signature remains completely intact. At times, his entire multi-decade discography feels like it could have been cut in one long session in any given year. For its part, Up Close lacks anything quite as breakneck as “Zap” or as hummable as “Cliffs of Dover,” but it’s not without memorable moments. “Gem” is just that, while Malford Milligan’s vocals are a welcome addition on “Brilliant Room.” The only real misstep is a leaden cover of the Electric Flag’s “Texas” that even guest guitarist Jimmie Vaughan can’t help to toughen up—Johnson’s blues instincts are better experienced peeking through the twists of signature instrumentals like “Fatdaddy.” Still, Up Close is a welcome return to the soothing territory that is Eric Johnson’s unique sonic home. –Jeff Leven
