After 18 years and 10 albums, Newfoundland’s leading musical proponents are newly independent and pared down to a core trio. The newfound flexibility becomes a launching point for Great Big Sea to veer from their usual overarching anthems. Recording in far-flung locales—studios, buses and basements—they welcome special guests, including producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. Following last year’s solo turn by guitarist Sean McCann (the reflective Lullabies for Bloodshot Eyes), Safe Upon the Shore incorporates various folk and traditional styles, segueing seamlessly from playful sing-alongs like “Don’t Wanna Go Home” to the carousing “Road to Ruin” and “Wandering Ways.” Its seamless diversity makes this jaunty return all the more memorable.
