A Patch of Blue Sky

Ending an eight-year absence, Kevin Welch’s new album shows us all over again why he’s regarded as an Americana icon. Accompanied by an ace band that includes son Dustin on banjo and guitar, and frequent collaborator and fellow Dead Reckoner Fats Kaplin on pedal steel, he delivers touching songs of remorse and redemption with stoic conviction and indomitable resolve. “The Great Emancipation,” “That’s How It Feels,” “Long Gone Dream” and “Marysville” are each imbued with a palpable ache and sigh, but they’re embossed in melodies both beautiful and bittersweet. Welch manages to momentarily part the clouds and find a patch of blue—“Answer Me That” and the title track are all gospel-like jubilation.
