In part, that\u2019s because Earle wrote three of the songs for the HBO series <i>Treme<\/i>, on which he played a street musician. There\u2019s zydeco-style accordion on \u201cThat All You Got?\u201d, and jaunty bayou fiddle on \u201cLove\u2019s Gonna Blow My Way,\u201d and the titular reference of \u201cAfter Mardi Gras.\u201d Even some of the songs not specifically about New Orleans have a humid, river-town feel, as heard in the subtle, jazzy piano of \u201cPocket Full of Rain\u201d and blustery swamp guitar of \u201cCalico County.\u201d If it\u2019s not fully a New Orleans album, it\u2019s definitely a road album. On the folky acoustic title track, Earle\u2019s voice carries the dust of a thousand byways, while \u201cDown the Road Part II\u201d pairs punchy mandolin with the steady thump of an upright bass for a revved-up feel. The original \u201cDown the Road\u201d appeared on <i>Guitar Town<\/i>, Earle\u2019s 1986 solo debut, which gives a sense of how many miles the Texas troubadour has traveled. \u2013Eric R.
