That\u2019s more a product of their live shows\u2014confetti-strewn freak-outs that feature frontman Wayne Coyne rolling over fans in a giant plastic ball\u2014than it is their albums, though career highlights\u00a0<i>The Soft Bulletin<\/i> (1999) and <i>Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots<\/i> (2002) offset sadness with lush, cosmic, calming psychedelia. Not so on <i>The Terror<\/i>, which offers space rock of a different variety. The synths on openers \u201cLook\u2026the Sun Is Rising\u201d and \u201cBe Free, a Way\u201d flicker like fluorescent bulbs on a burned-out lunar station, while the scraping guitars and pulsing kraut-rock rhythms add menace to Coyne\u2019s lyrics. \u201cWhen you really listen,\u201d he sings, \u201cfear is all you hear.\u201d In fact, that\u2019s not all you hear\u2014\u201cTry to Explain\u201d manages Beach Boyish blissfulness amid the bleakness\u2014but Coyne\u2019s not kidding when he says the Lips have made a \u201cdisturbing record\u201d about life in the absence of love. On a disc loaded with potential thesis statements\u2014\u201cTurning Violent,\u201d \u201cButterfly, How Long It Takes to Die,\u201d etc.\u2014\u201cYou Are Alone\u201d functions as a centerpiece, accomplishing in four minutes what other tracks do in double or triple that time. With its alarm-like throb, the tune finds Coyne debating whether he\u2019s truly alone.
