I\u2019ve actually heard Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols coming out of\u00a0<i>Morning Joe<\/i>\u00a0commercial breaks\u2014my fault for falling asleep watching the channel the night before.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, predictably, they had \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water\u201d during one of the afternoon shows\u2014like we needed to hear that song or another one like it to make us feel better.<\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0<i>any<\/i>\u00a0song could make us feel better.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Yankees one-upped it last night by playing \u201cSweet Caroline\u201d to show solidarity with Boston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/image0011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9377\" alt=\"image001\" src=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/image0011-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/image0011-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/image0011-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/image0011.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>At least there aren\u2019t any vengeful \u201cGod Bless America\u201d rallies at the Capitol Building, like after 9-11, or Clear Channel-like lists of 150 songs you can\u2019t play on the radio.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I had a few Facebook friends who did seek a good Boston song to provide solace. The Standells\u2019 \u201cDirty Water,\u201d which is about Boston, was an obvious choice, until it was pointed out that The Standells are in fact from Los Angeles. Another suggestion was Boston\u2019s own favorite son Jonathan Richman\u2019s immortal suburban Boston drive-thru \u201cRoadrunner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet this sort of exercise misses the point, same with 9-11: Neither event was\u00a0<i>local<\/i>, but of grave national, yea, international significance. And where Woody Guthrie\u2019s \u201cThis Land Is Your Land\u201d would certainly have been appropriate then and now, Ashford &amp; Simpson\u2019s &#8220;Reach Out and Touch (Somebody&#8217;s Hand)&#8221; always conveys what should always be our goal in times good and bad, individually and as a people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReach out and touch somebody\u2019s hand.
