With the Black Keys\u2019 Dan Auerbach on board as producer, the group incorporates rock elements (would Bill Monroe have ever used a Mellotron?) without abandoning their acoustic roots. Newcomer David Mayfield makes his presence known with a stinging electric guitar run on the opening cut, \u201cTrapped Under the Ice.\u201d \u201cTrash Bag\u201d starts with airy Beach Boy-like harmonies and piano while later, the fiery fiddle work recalls Zeppelin\u2019s \u201cKashmir.\u201d The band further reveals its rock soul in \u201cBathsheeba,\u201d an exuberant grunge-grass number. The group impressively shifts musical gears throughout <em>Letters in the Deep<\/em>\u2014going rugged and rootsy on \u201cBreak My Heart Again\u201d and \u201c3rd Degree,\u201d then easing back effortlessly on lovely, laidback gems \u201cHuman Cannonball\u201d and \u201cBallad of Restored Confidence.\u201d With album number three, the members of Cadillac Sky prove to be inventive Americana explorers well worth following.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013Michael Berick<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CADILLAC SKY Letters in the Deep [Dualtone] Never known as a strictly bluegrass band, Cadillac Sky continues its musical evolution.
