On its third album, the New York City trio moves quickly from hook-worthy verses to still-catchier choruses, offering little that cannot be hummed. The stopwatch is constantly running, and even on the Goth-tinged ballad \u201cPittsburgh,\u201d founders Keith Murray and Chris Cain won\u2019t let things drag. In a macro sense\u2014eras in rock history\u2014Murray and Cain are less precise, more willing to wander. <em>Barbara<\/em> starts in the early 1980s, with the Fixx-like new wave of \u201cRules Don\u2019t Stop,\u201d then fast-forwards to 2004, the year of Franz Ferdinand\u2019s \u201cTake Me Out,\u201d the template for the Scientists\u2019 \u201cI Don\u2019t Bite.\u201d Later, Murray and Cain prove their rock mettle, festooning \u201cNice Guys\u201d and \u201cJack &amp; Ginger\u201d with melodies Jimmy Eat World never got around to writing.
