That might explain songs like \u201cDancing out of the Dark\u201d and lines like \u201cdancing animals \/<br \/>\nentwining animals \/ in cuneiform and ruin,\u201d though really, <em>Swallows<\/em> defies easy explanation. James sets bold, mystical lyrics to clattering bits of percussion and off-kilter keyboard programming, turning coffeehouse-chanteuse tropes inside out. Nearly every song brings something unexpected\u2014Celtic flute on \u201cIcarus,\u201d jazzy sax and drums on \u201cToday in the City\u201d\u2014and as far as constants go, her imperfectly lilting voice is anything but conventional.
