When a fella\u2019s been recording for as long as Bobby Bare has, he gets to thinking about history\u2014not so much his own, but the centuries\u2019 worth of strange and wondrous songs that make up the American folk and country canon. Fifty years on from his first hit, the 77-year-old Bare picks a wide range of classics, everything from Dust Bowl laments (\u201cGoing Down the Road [I Ain\u2019t Going to Be Treated This Way]\u201d) and campfire classics (\u201cShenandoah\u201d) to songs by U2 (\u201cI Still Haven\u2019t Found What I\u2019m Looking For\u201d) and alt-country hero Alejandro Escovedo, who guests on \u201cI Was Drunk.\u201d Bare makes the songs feel of a piece, singing in a conversational, grandfatherly tone that\u2014even on tales of drinking, gambling, murder and war\u2014suggests Sunday afternoon story hour. It\u2019s a far cry from, say, Johnny Cash\u2019s death-haunted latter-day Rick Rubin discs, but Bare\u2019s cornball reading of \u201cBoll Weevil\u201d and general take-\u2019er-easy tone emphasize the lighter side of traditional music\u2014something that ought not be overlooked. For those craving existential contemplation, there\u2019s the original \u201cI Was a Young Man Once,\u201d but even there, this icon seems fine with the passage of time.<\/p>\n
