Her soothing voice lends a twisted effect to this EP. The largely acoustic \u201cIce Age\u201d is oddly folksy, and for a six-song set, <em>An Omen<\/em> boasts a wide emotional spectrum. There are periods of tranquility that give way to invocations of disaster\u2014something Reznor and Maandig convey on the chorus of the opening track: \u201cI \u2026 can\u2019t \u2026 keep it together.\u201d Though Reznor forges new ground, he doesn\u2019t forget his past. The electronic violence of \u201cOn the Wing\u201d is reminiscent of \u201cTerrible Lie,\u201d and \u201cThe Loop Closes\u201d would have fit comfortably on <em>Pretty Hate Machine<\/em>. Closer \u201cSpeaking in Tongues\u201d is slow, distorted and disturbing.
