After discovering Billy Joel and Paul McCartney in her father\u2019s record collection at age 14, music became a constant in her life, and she began writing songs. Kaprelian\u2019s career ramped up when she won a OneRepublic cover contest with her rendition of \u201cApologize.\u201d OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder introduced her to executives at Interscope Records, who signed her to a record deal. In 2010, the label released <em>Sinner or a Saint<\/em>. The album\u2019s first single, \u201cNew Day,\u201d was featured on episodes of <em>American Idol<\/em> and MTV\u2019s <em>The Hills<\/em>, and Kaprelian served as opening act for Grammy-nominated artists La Roux and Far East Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Kaprelian\u2019s new five-song EP, <em>California<\/em>, was just released on recently launched Killer Tracks Artist Series, an organization that\u00a0issues original EPs geared toward music licensing and syncs. The voracious listener took cues from some of her favorite musicians. \u201cI was listening to a lot of Tom Petty and the Wallflowers,\u201d she says, \u201cso I feel like this EP was really influenced by their records.\u201d The album was recorded in Los Angeles and reflects on her time in the Golden State. \u201cIt\u2019s about trying to lure someone to move somewhere for you because you\u2019re in love with them,\u201d Kaprelian explains, \u201cand what better place to live than a place that\u2019s always beautiful, always sunny, and always puts you in a great mood.\u201d Kaprelian is also balancing other activities\u2014she\u2019s a student at New York\u2019s Columbia University.
