True, his sharp, spiraling runs are all over \u201cBackground Music\u201d\u2014a song with far too many dynamic shifts to justify its self-deprecating name. Ditto \u201cTry\u201d and \u201cEndogenous Oscillators.\u201d But on the seven-plus-minute centerpiece \u201cAnnihilator Gators,\u201d he stays out of the swamp, letting the horns squawk and bray over a chomping upright bass. Bhatia\u2019s closing \u201cA Change Is Gonna Come\u201d sounds nothing like the Sam Cooke original, but its stately sax and strings set the proper mood.
