Even her 1990s country-pop hits practically defied radio with their profundity. Nevertheless, <em>The Age of Miracles<\/em> explores the emotional aftermath of a pulmonary embolism that nearly killed Carpenter in 2007. \u201cEverything that you know can disappear,\u201d she muses on \u201cIceland,\u201d while the upbeat finale promises, \u201cThe radio playing \u2018I Won\u2019t Back Down\u2019\/Baby, that\u2019s about the way I feel.\u201d Despite its very personal genesis, the album looks outside almost as much as in, imagining the reflections of a soldier at Tiananmen Square (\u201c4 June 1989\u201d), as well as those of\u00a0 \u201cMrs. Hemingway.\u201d Like the work of Mr. Hemingway, Carpenter\u2019s lyrics can be deceptively simple, darker truths rewarding only repeated exposure. <em>The Age of Miracles<\/em> is not an easy listen on any level, but the endeavor is worthwhile as ever.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013Katie Dodd<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER The Age of Miracles [Real World] Is there a songwriter who needed a dose of big-picture perspective less than Mary Chapin Carpenter?
