Having played alt-rock heroes in the post-Cobain \u201990s and unlikely political rock-opera dramatists in the Bush \u201900s, the trio inches back toward its punk roots, crafting restless power-pop tunes that\u2014modern studio sheen notwithstanding\u2014might have fit on 1992\u2019s pre-fame <em>Kerplunk<\/em>. It\u2019s a welcome change, and not just because the band\u2019s last album, 2009\u2019s <em>21st Century Breakdown<\/em>, buckled under the weight of its own arena-rock ambition. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has always excelled at writing songs for pimply young romantics\u2014even the best songs on the 2004 antiwar song cycle <em>American Idiot<\/em> deal with teen angst\u2014and on tunes like \u201cStay the Night\u201d and \u201cFell for You,\u201d he obsesses over girls, unsure whether to smother them with kisses or with pillows.\u00a0Of course, you can\u2019t turn 40, pen two rock operas, and become your generation\u2019s Bono without growing as a songwriter. Portions of <em>\u00a1Uno!<\/em> reflect the changes in Armstrong\u2019s life, and on \u201cCarpe Diem,\u201d\u00a0he asks, \u201cMaking a living, making a killing \/ What\u2019s worth forgiving?\u201d These Bay Area boys have, indeed, made a killing, but even though they\u2019re rich old men\u2014\u201cthe last gang in town,\u201d as Armstrong sings on \u201cRusty James,\u201d referencing the Clash\u2014they consider themselves \u201ctoo young to die.\u201d They\u2019re searching for the Fountain of Youth, and even if it\u2019s a fool\u2019s quest, it\u2019s fun to tag along. \u2013Kenneth Partridge<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GREEN DAY \u00a1Uno!\u00a0 [Reprise] Fourth act, same as the first: That\u2019s the story Green Day aims to tell with \u00a1Uno!, the first installment in a trilogy of albums they\u2019ll roll out over the next few months.
