That may be an understatement. Yes, Muse\u2019s latest is a set of wildly divergent songs that coalesce around Bellamy\u2019s voice\u2014but the trio\u2019s sheer force of will and considerable musical chops don\u2019t hurt either. With a massive guitar riff and imposing strings, opener \u201cSupremacy\u201d charges ahead like a long-lost sequel to Led Zeppelin\u2019s \u201cKashmir.\u201d \u201cMadness\u201d broods darkly on shuddering synthesizers and an implacable beat as Bellamy\u2019s supple voice soars. \u201cPanic Station\u201d is a heavy blast of hip-swiveling funk, while \u201cBig Freeze\u201d has a theatrical, kaleidoscopic swagger worthy of Freddie Mercury. \u201cFollow Me\u201d hews more closely to Muse\u2019s earlier work, piling layers of buzzing synthesizers around Bellamy\u2019s rich voice as it takes flight against a black sky. All those sounds come from one band, making <em>The 2nd Law<\/em> a daring, deeply ambitious album of the first order. \u2013Eric R.
