Pedal steel ace Greg Leisz anchors the understated folk-country arrangements, while the harmony vocals of Aoife O\u2019Donovan and Buddy Miller (the latter on Merle Haggard\u2019s \u201cI Started Loving You Again\u201d) add depth to Rodriguez\u2019s own smoky alto. She takes the notion of \u201croots music\u201d a step further than most, including father David Rodriguez\u2019s \u201cWhen I Heard Gypsy Davy Sing\u201d and closing with a stunning take on \u201cLa Pu\u00f1alada Trapera,\u201d a ballad recorded five decades ago by great-aunt Eva Garza and a staple of Rodriguez\u2019s live performances. Taken as a whole, the album is a slow burn reminiscent of Emmylou Harris\u2019 <em>Wrecking Ball<\/em>.
