In recent years, Cooder has grown comfortable as a songwriter, penning tunes increasingly topical in nature. <em>Election Special<\/em> comprises broadsides in the tradition of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs. It\u2019s an unambiguous album: Cooder doesn\u2019t like Republicans, Wall Streeters, Tea Partiers, the Koch brothers or their followers. He isn\u2019t strident, though\u2014not at the expense of humor. Had he wanted to simply point fingers, opening with \u201cMutt Romney Blues,\u201d inspired by Mitt\u2019s infamous dog-on-car-roof incident, wouldn\u2019t have been his best move.
