Remaining original member Kurt Neumann here joins longtime keyboardist Michael Ramos and a few fresh faces to deliver a nonetheless familiar set of heartland rock. Neumann\u2019s husky timbre, workingman\u2019s tales and rootsy hooks have always suggested a Midwestern Springsteen, a connection made explicit on <em>American Made<\/em> with a cover of the Boss\u2019 \u201cI\u2019m on Fire.\u201d Some of the originals could use a little more fire\u2014midtempo tracks like \u201cAll the World\u201d and \u201cAll Over Me\u201d simmer more than ignite. Far more engaging are \u201cChemical,\u201d Neumann\u2019s searing portrait of an addict\u2019s life, as well as the bittersweet \u201cEverything You Wanted\u201d and the rousing \u201cAmerican.\u201d Ramos\u2019 accordion and newcomer Warren Hood\u2019s fiddle inject \u201cFlyaway\u201d and \u201cWalk Thru This World\u201d with an appealing Celtic flavor and fuel the spirited closer, \u201cShake the Fever.\u201d \u2013Michael Berick<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BODEANS American Made [Free &amp; Alive] BoDeans\u2019 latest is the first album in the band\u2019s nearly three-decade career without co-founder Sammy Llanas, who departed abruptly last year.
