His last album of original songs was 2002\u2019s so-so <em>Up<\/em>; now at last we have the follow-up, and it\u2019s a collection of\u2014wait for it\u2014covers. He reunites here with producer Bob Ezrin (who also helmed Gabriel\u2019s 1977 self-titled solo debut), and together they frame Gabriel\u2019s voice using only piano and strings. Much of the material here is slow, deliberate, dreamy\u2014molasses runs faster than his takes on David Bowie\u2019s \u201cHeroes\u201d and Paul Simon\u2019s \u201cThe Boy in the Bubble\u201d\u2014and the orchestral palate shows Ezrin\u2019s gift for arrangement and knack for tonal beauty. But what\u2019s the point? Gabriel has always been a trailblazer who extends sonic boundaries and takes us down unexpected paths.
