American music comes from the church, so it\u2019s fitting that American Standard<\/em>\u2014a sampling of homegrown sounds spanning hollerin\u2019 blues to the Replacements\u2019 \u201cHere Comes a Regular\u201d\u2014opens with a prayer. \u201cI\u2019ll be a great sage or a fabulous liar,\u201d Dayna Kurtz sings on \u201cInvocation,\u201d pleading with \u201cmama\u201d\u2014maybe her mother, maybe the Virgin Mary\u2014to \u201clet me come home.\u201d Kurtz will take redemption however she can get it, and if there\u2019s a theme on this record, that might be it. American Standard <\/em>is one of two new albums from this New Jersey songstress, and on the strength of its originals, it edges out companion Secret Canon Vol. 1<\/em>, which features obscure jazz covers.\u00a0 While Kurtz is an imaginative interpreter\u2014dig the switchblade twang on the \u201950s artifact \u201cLou Lou Knows\u201d\u2014she\u2019s equally great on her own rockabilly rave-ups, malt-shop ballads and a cappella blues tunes. The closing \u201cElection Day\u201d is a revelatory New Orleans jazz tribute to our current president, and while Kurtz knows better than to sanctify anyone\u2014not in the conflicted country described on \u201cBillboards for Jesus\u201d\u2014she grants herself the moment of hopefulness that\u2019s hers by national birthright.<\/p>\n
