\"\"John Mellencamp was relatively unknown when photographer Norman Seeff shot this 1979 session. \u201cHe was very young, kind of baby-faced,\u201d recalls Seeff. \u201cBut I was blown away by his vitality.\u201d Seeff was also impressed by Mellencamp\u2019s authenticity, a trait reflected in his casual attire. \u201cIt was as if he was saying, \u2018This is who I am. I come with nothing but a denim shirt and a cigarette,\u2019\u201d Seeff says. \u201cThere was nothing pre-conceptual about the shoot.\u201d Mellencamp threw himself into the session with intensity. \u201cHe was doing a live performance as we were shooting,\u201d recalls Seeff. \u201cHe was totally in the moment in a way that perhaps even went beyond what he would do onstage.\u201d Seeff wasn\u2019t surprised when Mellencamp\u2019s career took off over the next several years. \u201cIt was one of those things where you knew this person was going places,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky enough to photograph artists before their careers took flight. When that happens, it\u2019s always a thrill.\u201d Images from the session were used for the cover of Mellencamp\u2019s 2004 greatest hits album Words & Music<\/em>.<\/p>\n
