Although it missed its chance to help define the genre, the group\u2019s consistency over the years has resulted in some of its finest recordings. This collection actually doesn\u2019t pick up till midway through Blue Highway\u2019s career, with its arrival at Rounder Records in 2001. By that time the quintet had already developed a sophisticated songwriting style, exemplified here by the likes of the down-but-not-out \u201cStill Climbing Mountains\u201d and the churning, self-explanatory \u201cWild Urge to Ramble.\u201d Exemplary vocalists and instrumentalists all, Blue Highway\u2019s members are equally at home with a spare ballad such as \u201cThe Seventh Angel\u201d (with cameo guest vocal by Alison Krauss) and more raucous numbers like Mark Knopfler\u2019s \u201cMarbletown\u201d or the opening \u201cCold and Lowdown Lonesome Blues,\u201d one of two new tracks included on this expertly curated retrospective.<br \/>\n\u2013Jeff Tamarkin<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Formed in the mid-1990s, Blue Highway was a relative latecomer to progressive bluegrass.
