His up-and-down fortunes have been dictated all too often by never-ending shifts in record-label affiliations, but each new album still brings an endlessly renewed sense of possibility. True to Sweet\u2019s retro sensibilities, <em>Modern Art<\/em> is distinguished by a psychedelic strain that courses throughout the proceedings. Byrds-like harmonies are plentiful as well, with the hushed vocals of \u201cOh, Oldendaze!\u201d, \u201cShe Walks the Night\u201d and \u201cBaltimore\u201d recalling the iconic <em>Fifth Dimension<\/em> and <em>The Notorious Byrds Brothers<\/em> albums in particular. Other offerings\u2014most notably \u201cIvory Tower\u201d (with its angry entreaty \u201cCome down from your ivory tower\u201d), the blistering \u201cLadyfingers\u201d and the shape-shifting \u201cLate Nights With the Power Pop\u201d (\u201c\u2026 drowning pain that will never stop\u201d)\u2013reflect an edgier side as well.
