Whether it\u2019s his latest movie or his new album, this is one creative dude <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Oscar-winning actor, acclaimed photographer, singer and songwriter: Is there anything Jeff Bridges can\u2019t do? \u201cI\u2019m not a very good auto mechanic,\u201d he confesses with a chuckle. Music is another story. While best known for his work in front of the camera, Bridges has been playing and singing for half a century. He picked up the guitar as a kid, influenced by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and elder brother Beau\u2019s old rock \u2019n\u2019 roll records. By 14 he was writing his own songs. While starring as a washed-up country singer in the 2009 film Crazy Heart<\/em>, Bridges seriously started thinking about recording an album of his own\u2014a follow-up to his little-heard 2000 release Be Here Soon<\/em>. \u201c\u2018This is fun,\u2019 I thought. \u2018I\u2019d like more,\u2019\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n

Bridges has a reputation for being one of the more laid-back leading men in Hollywood, an attitude he brought to the recording studio. \u201cOn anything, whether it\u2019s a movie or a record, there\u2019s a point when you bring in material and try to define the project,\u201d he explains. \u201cIf you\u2019re lucky, something happens along the way and it starts to tell you what it wants. And that\u2019s a wonderful thing. You\u2019re just fulfilling what the album or movie is telling you to do.\u201d To\u00a0produce his self-titled new album Bridges recruited Crazy Heart<\/em> collaborator T Bone Burnett, a friend of more than 30 years. He also brought in another longtime pal, songwriter John Goodwin, who contributed three songs.<\/p>\n

For his own originals, Bridges dug into what he calls the \u201cmusic mine\u201d of tunes he\u2019s quietly been writing for decades. He also drew from the 1987 novel that inspired Crazy Heart<\/em>, using the title of one of protagonist Bad Blake\u2019s fictional hits as the inspiration for \u201cSlow Boat.\u201d Burnett came up with the chord progression, and Bridges had the lyric penned in 20 minutes. \u201cThe most fun of making movies and making records is working with all those creative people,\u201d Bridges says. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going to bring to the party, and you\u2019re surprised by how you respond to it. Something completely unique takes place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Bridges isn\u2019t able to perform live as much as he\u2019d like due to movie obligations, don\u2019t look for him to put his guitar back in the case anytime soon. \u201cThis has really tickled up all my music,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
