She lives for the teen melodrama of doo-wop and early-\u201960s girl-group pop, and on this Oakland trio\u2019s sophomore album, she pouts and growls but never plays the pushover. Shaw sounds genuinely heartbroken on ballads like \u201cTired of Being Bad,\u201d but the irreverent \u201cHalf Rat\u201d is a better example of what she does best. Singing to a philandering ex-con boyfriend, she threatens to tie a bell around the bad boy\u2019s neck, lest he wander off again.<\/p>\n<p>On \u201cThe Cult Song\u201d\u2014sort of a cross between the Ramones\u2019 \u201cWe\u2019re a Happy Family\u201d and Sheb Wooley\u2019s 1958 novelty tune \u201cThe Purple People Eater\u201d\u2014Shaw stands firm against a Jim Jones-type, insisting, \u201cI don\u2019t wanna be in your cult no more!\u201d Down the stretch, guitarist Cody Blanchard takes the lead, putting a chill in the creepy \u201cOld Man Winter\u201d and wailing with a voice distinguishable from Shaw\u2019s only by the presence of demonic rockabilly yelps.
