The whole crew climbed up what Diltz calls a \u201csecret magic mountain,\u201d reaching the top at daybreak. As the sun rose, they began snapping photos for the group\u2019s upcoming self-titled debut album. \u201cYou can see people are a little haggard from staying up all night,\u201d Diltz says. The troupe spent the rest of the day taking peyote and shooting more photos. \u201cWe spent the day laughing and communing with nature,\u201d Diltz says with a chuckle. \u201cJust having a great old time.\u201d Diltz recalls that the Eagles\u2014(from left) Bernie Leadon, Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Glenn Frey\u2014were flush with optimism. \u201cThey were excited,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019d discovered they could make this amazing music, and people were just beginning to realize how good it was.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOTOGRAPHER HENRY DILTZ, ALBUM-COVER DESIGNER\u00a0Gary Burden and the four members of a new band called the Eagles set out from Los Angeles at 2 a.m. on March 20, 1972, arriving three hours later at the area that is now Joshua Tree National Park.
