He roused himself and hustled to the stage to capture on film the festival\u2019s final performer. By the time Jimi Hendrix went on, at 9 a.m., the once half-million-strong audience had dwindled to about 25,000. \u201cThere were these huge speakers,\u201d Diltz says. \u201cNow that there wasn\u2019t a crowd to absorb the sound, it bounced off the surrounding hills.\u201d Diltz recalls his amazement when he heard Hendrix\u2019s incandescent rendition of the U.S. national anthem. \u201cIt was very eerie in that stillness to hear this single guitar playing \u2018The Star Spangled Banner\u2019 so loud,\u201d he says. \u201cYou just thought, \u2018Yeah, we own that too.
