Since its start in 2011, Make Music Winter has become a positive outlet for music enthusiasts and their neighbors to meet up, learn a new skill, and march through public spaces while making music with bells, electric guitars, their own voices, percussion, and more unusual instruments. The event has grown to include 35+ cities across the nation each year.<\/p>\n<p>Drummers <strong>Brian Chase<\/strong> of the <strong>Yeah Yeah Yeahs<\/strong> and <strong>Glenn Kotche<\/strong> of <strong>Wilco<\/strong> will be premiering new compositions, on December 21, using bells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In\u00a0New York City,<\/strong>\u00a0Make Music Winter events will ring in the holiday season across the five boroughs. In\u00a0Manhattan,\u00a0<strong>Patrick Grant<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars<\/strong>\u00a0will play with other mobile musicians in &#8220;Standing Still&#8221; at noon in Herald Square, followed by the evening procession &#8220;Winter Luminaria with Tilted Axes&#8221; through\u00a0Sasaki Garden\u00a0set aglow with lights in a special partnership with NYU Faculty Housing Happenings, while\u00a0<strong>Mobile Hallelujah<\/strong>\u00a0singers will pop up at seven midtown locations. In\u00a0Brooklyn,\u00a0<strong>Flatfoot Flatbush\u00a0<\/strong>will\u00a0feature\u00a0dancers, fiddlers, and pickers parading down Flatbush Avenue playing old-time tunes while flatfooting, a form of percussive dancing from Appalachia. In Queens, the second annual\u00a0<strong>Queensboro Music &amp; Dance Festival<\/strong>\u00a0will showcase live music and dance from many of the borough&#8217;s cultures, teaching basic dance moves and providing handheld percussive instruments so that spectators can join in. And in the\u00a0Bronx, the\u00a0<strong>Melrose Parranda<\/strong>\u00a0will join Make Music Winter for the eighth consecutive year, bringing this Puerto Rican caroling tradition to different &#8220;casitas&#8221; and community gardens in the neighborhood, led by notable\u00a0Bronx\u00a0musicians including Jorge V\u00e1zquez,\u00a0Matthew Gonzalez, and\u00a0Bobby Sanabria. Many other\u00a0New York\u00a0events will be announced in early December.<\/p>\n<p>Make Music Winter&#8217;s signature\u00a0<strong>Bell by Bell<\/strong>\u00a0program also returns nationwide in 2022, featuring the world premieres of new compositions by\u00a0<strong>Brian Chase<\/strong>\u00a0(Grammy-nominated\u00a0<strong>Yeah Yeah Yeahs<\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong>Glenn Kotche<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>Wilco<\/strong>), named one of the &#8220;Greatest Drummers of All Time&#8221; by\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. In eight cities on\u00a0December 21\u00a0(<strong>Astoria, OR<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Auburn, CA<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Land O&#8217; Lakes, WI<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Los Angeles, CA<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>New London, CT<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>New York, NY<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Salem, OR<\/strong>) an event leader will distribute dozens of color-coded diatonic bells to the crowd, one color per note. At the front of the group, a team of conductors will wave corresponding colored flags to lead the group in slowly moving music by the composers, creating a sonorous, atmospheric soundscape. No one needs to be a musician in order to join in and play the pieces. At the\u00a0New York\u00a0performance,\u00a0Brian Chase\u00a0will perform as one of the conductors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20272\" src=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg 660w, https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn\u00a0California&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Auburn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Long Beach<\/strong>\u00a0cities, as well as\u00a0<strong>Boston, MA<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chicago, IL<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elgin, IL<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Macon, GA<\/strong>, participants can allow\u00a0<strong>The Resonant Path\u00a0<\/strong>to melt away the past year&#8217;s frustrations.\u00a0Each city will present a path lined with gongs, continuously played over the course of an hour, that creates a natural crescendo and decrescendo as participants walk past, enveloped in waves of sound.<\/p>\n<p>Additional Make Music Winter events will take place in\u00a0<strong>Altoona, PA<\/strong><strong>;\u00a0Clatsop County, OR;\u00a0Federal Way, WA;\u00a0La Crosse, WI;\u00a0Land O Lakes, WI;\u00a0Los Angeles, CA;\u00a0Macon, GA;\u00a0Montclair, NJ;\u00a0Mystic, CT;\u00a0Ossining, NY;\u00a0Polk County, OR;\u00a0Salem, OR;\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Tucson, AZ<\/strong>. From harmonica jams to yodeling workshops, unique Make Music Winter programs are being planned around the country.
