Marty Stuart & the Fabulous Superlatives<\/p><\/div>\n

We talked with Jeff Fasano about his portrait of MARTY STUART<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n

It was my first New Year\u2019s Eve in Nashville and Marty was playing City Winery to close out the year. It was a fun shoot and those are three heavy duty players in his band, The Fabulous Superlatives.<\/p>\n

We set up to do those portrait sessions, and you could tell I wasn\u2019t lighting things at that time. I was shooting with available light\u2014from those fluorescent lights in the ceiling of the City Winery green room. I got some great shots shooting that way, which is what Jim Marshall used to do.<\/p>\n

I had Jim Marshall in my head. If you look at his books, that\u2019s the kind of photographs he created. He didn\u2019t have any lights\u2014he just shot whatever was there, with available light.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a tiny room and we got the whole band in there with Marty. When you open up 24 mm, you\u2019re able to get everybody. What\u2019s fun now is that I always see three of those guys from the Fabulous Superlatives all around town, a lot. Kenny Vaughan, with the hat, is a really cool guy and he always remembers me when I see him\u2014and it\u2019s all from the friendship we developed during that photo shoot.<\/p>\n

I had never seen Marty Stuart perform live before that photo shoot. And that night, the music blew me away. What was even more impressive was Marty playing his mandolin\u2014and how good he is on that instrument. It was like nothing I\u2019ve heard before. I\u2019m friends with some of the top mandolin players like Sam Bush, who is also a truly incredible fiddle player. But Marty Stuart is on that level\u2014he\u2019s a world class mandolin player. He just blew me away that night. He was really good and that was an all-around great night.<\/p>\n
