That was especially evident on her critically acclaimed double disc <em>Fantastic Voyage<\/em>, which found her wide-eyed narratives accompanying a set of adventurous instrumentals. James\u2019 latest offers her an opportunity to further test the standard singer-songwriter template by cushioning her sunny Americana in a fluorescent haze. \u201cAirstream Girl,\u201d \u201cFalling Waltz 2\u201d and \u201cGoin\u2019 to California\u201d carry an amiable, easygoing attitude, with fiddles and banjos accompanying James\u2019 wistful vocals. That dreamlike quality is evident throughout, but never diffuses the music\u2019s impact.
