Since its start in 2011, Make Music Winter has provided a way for music enthusiasts to meet up, march and play through public spaces, and make music with bells, electric guitars, voices, percussion, and more unusual instruments.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20271\" src=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-c.jpg 660w, https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-c-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn keeping with the gift-giving season, sound-making toys will make their Make Music Winter debut in <strong>The Mutant Toy Parade<\/strong>, a participatory composition by Argentina-based artist <strong>Laureano Cantarutti<\/strong>\u00a0premiering in six U.S. cities. Children and adults are invited to come and experiment with \u201ccircuit-bent\u201d toy steering wheels, recordable buzzers, and\u00a0disfigured talking dolls\u00a0designed by Cantarutti and assembled by local musicians in each city. Participants will then parade through the streets playing music using the toys and hand percussion instruments, which will be free to take home as a holiday gift for further music-making experimentation. Mutant Toy Parades will take to the streets in\u00a0<strong>New York (NY)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Montclair (NJ), Salem (OR)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Knoxville (TN), Toledo (OH),\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Altoona (PA).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20272\" src=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d.jpg 660w, https:\/\/mmusicmag.com\/m\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Make-Music-Winter-2021-d-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong>Back for the second year,<strong>\u00a0Rhythm Band Instruments (RBI)<\/strong>\u00a0is celebrating Make Music Winter across the country, providing over 300 instruments ranging from bells to Boomwhackers in eleven cities for participatory winter music. RBI\u2019s bells will star in\u00a0<strong>New York (NY)<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>\u201cBell by Bell,\u201d from 6:00-7:00 PM<\/strong>\u00a0in SoHo (at Elizabeth St., between Prince and Spring St.). This event has become a Make Music Winter tradition, with volunteers from Elizabeth Street Garden handing out color-coded bells to revelers who get a crash course in handbell basics, then play collectively with a team of conductors. Forty miles up the river in\u00a0<strong>Ossining\/Briarcliff (NY)<\/strong>,\u00a0RBI instruments will be part of\u00a0a Make Music Winter day of concerts, interactive music events, workshops and music lessons, offering something for everyone. In the small town of\u00a0<strong>Land O\u2019 Lakes (WI)<\/strong>, RBI will offer instruments for beginner ukulele and hand bell classes. New York\u2019s events (in addition to Bell by Bell and the Mutant Toy Parade) will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cAfrican Drumming\u201d &#8211; 2:00-4:00 PM\u00a0<\/strong>at the Plaza at 300 Ashland, Brooklyn.\u00a0Join a drum circle master class led\u00a0by\u00a0Brooklyn Music School\u00a0to learn and perform rhythms from the Congo and West Africa on djembes and congas supplied by the school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cFlatfoot Flatbush\u201d &#8211; 4:00-6:00 PM\u00a0<\/strong>at Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.Presented with Porch Stomp, City Stompers, and the North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District and celebrating its eighth consecutive year, dancers, fiddlers, and pickers will parade down Flatbush Avenue playing old-time tunes while flatfooting, a form of percussive dancing from Appalachia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cStanding Still\u201d &#8211; 10:45-11:15 AM<\/strong>in Midtown Manhattan. Musicians of all persuasions with an instrument that can be played while moving \u2013 acoustic guitars, horns, strings, percussion, you name it \u2013 will join music group Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars in a 30-minute participatory parade through Midtown South, including a stop at Herald Square at precisely 10:59am when the sun \u201cstands still,\u201d and during which the entire ensemble will mark the occasion with a magic minute to surprise onlookers.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>HONK NYC! presents Radiant Revelry\u201d &#8211; 6:00-7:00 PM<\/strong>in Greenwich Village. HONK NYC&#8217;s fourth Winter Solstice procession is a cathartic parade of music and dance that commemorates the lives of those lost after two years of COVID-19 and celebrates a time of revitalization and hope. The parade meanders through the West Village to a finale in Astor Place Plaza just as a separate parade,\u00a0<strong>\u201cTambor Tuesday Street Jam\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>&#8211;\u00a06:30-7:30 PM<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0sets off in a route through the East Village to the legendary club Drom. \u201cTambor Tuesday,\u201d presented in partnership with the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, features music from\u00a0Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Samba and Reggae traditions and stars musicians from\u00a0Mambemb\u00e9 Music, Afro Cuban rumba with Kikiriki Biquey, and People of Earth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cHarlem Solstice Jam\u201d &#8211; 5:00-7:00 PM<\/strong>at Uptown Grand Central. Enjoy a rollicking evening of brass, Samba, and marching band music. The program features performances by the Afro-funk\/Latin\/New Orleans-style brass outfit the Underground Horns; Batal\u00e1, an all-women Afro-Brazilian Samba Reggae percussion band; the Harlem-based Marching Cobras, and much more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cMelrose Parranda\u201d &#8211; 6:00-7:00 PM<\/strong>starting at the Bronx Music Hall. The Bronx Music \u00a0Heritage Center (BMHC) hosts its 7th consecutive\u00a0Make\u00a0Music\u00a0Winter program in the Melrose\u00a0section of the Bronx with a procession\u00a0or\u00a0<em>parranda<\/em>, the Puerto Rican tradition of caroling. Based on the\u00a0music\u00a0of\u00a0plena and other holiday songs from the island, this festive parade will be led by members of the Bronx\u00a0music\u00a0and cultural community, including Jorge V\u00e1zquez, Matthew Gonzalez, and Bobby Sanabria. Each stop along the\u00a0parranda\u00a0will be a different\u00a0casita, the little houses that evoke the countryside in Puerto Rico.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Mobile Hallelujah\u201d &#8211; 6:00-8:00 PM<\/strong>. Join the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District for an afternoon of music-making! Victorian Carolers, Downtown Holiday Brass, and Mediterranean Holiday Band will perform throughout Downtown Boston as part of their holiday market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pittsburgh, PA &#8211; Sing-Along with Anna From Frozen<\/strong>.\u00a0All ages are invited to join in a sing-along worthy of\u00a0Arendelle\u2019s queen. Local musician Elizabeth Chase will lead the public in singing along with classic Christmas songs, as well as those from the hit movies,\u00a0<em>Frozen<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Frozen II<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cleveland, OH &#8211; A Musical Hike<\/strong>. A five-mile hike with members of the Cleveland Hiking Club through the Tremont and Ohio City areas, the troop will be\u00a0stopping along the way to play popular, secular holiday tunes on kazoos and sing along from sheet music.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Litchfield, CT &#8211;<\/strong><strong>Community Meditation and Sound Healing<\/strong>. A daytime meditation event alongside facilitator\u00a0Grace Magnusson paired with gong and singing bowls.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Macon, GA &#8211; Where Soul Rocks On!\u00a0<\/strong>Free sidewalk giveaways in downtown Macon, including kazoos, drumsticks, and more to make music!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rochester, NY &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u201cMaracat\u00fa Workshop\u201d<\/strong>. Participants can learn to play the basic rhythms and instruments of Brazilian maracat\u00fa music and discover its cultural context.
