With a playing style that glides effortlessly among jazz, R&B and funk, bassist Marcus Miller has long been in demand as a sideman. But he shines brightest when he\u2019s the man up front, as on this live collaboration with the Monte- Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Joined by an inspired cast of musicians including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, singer and guitarist Raul Mid\u00f3n and turntablist DJ Logic, Miller underlines the extent of his gifts. The opening \u201cBlast!\u201d is an exercise in Middle Eastern\u2013tinged funk that establishes the possibilities of the oversized crew. But it\u2019s during a trio of tunes associated with Miles\u2014\u201cSo What,\u201d the Gershwins\u2019 \u201cI Loves You Porgy\u201d and \u201cAmandla\u201d (which Miller wrote)\u2014that the group\u2019s virtuosic musicianship and Miller\u2019s exceptional arranging skills come to the fore. An appropriately somber reading of the anti-lynching anthem \u201cStrange Fruit\u201d with Herbie Hancock guesting on piano may not send the show off on a cheerful note, but it certainly leaves the listener awed. \u2013Jeff Tamarkin<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
