The alto saxophone meandering through some of the songs is also part of the wistful mood of the record\u2014all late nights and neon signs illuminating wet streets as Bejar, always an eclectic songwriter, spins scenes that are as evocative as they are oblique. He\u2019s a master of clever wordplay, whether flipping clich\u00e9s on their heads in a soft, regretful voice on \u201cSavage Night at the Opera\u201d or piecing together tumbles of disjointed images on \u201cBlue Eyes.\u201d It\u2019s an album that\u2019s both fascinating and heartbreaking, and it\u2019s up to you which one comes first. \u2013Eric R.
