And yet something about music pulls people to one another. It seems that the human urge toward creative collaboration is as strong as our more universal desire for friendship, family and community. Even in 2010, it still takes two to tango—if you want to have fun, anyway.

Take our cover subject, Sarah McLachlan, who has enjoyed a close and fruitful partnership with producer and writer Pierre Marchand for nearly two decades. Or hard-rock giant Ozzy Osbourne, who has made a joyful noise with partners ranging from original bandmates in Black Sabbath to current co-writer and producer Kevin Churko. There’s Tift Merritt, who upped the collaborative ante recently by marrying her longtime drummer. Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles tapped Kid Rock, Keb’ Mo’ and Dwight Yoakam for his new album; master steel guitarist Robert Randolph worked closely with superproducer T Bone Burnett to create his latest; and legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock went around the world seeking out like-minded fellow musicians for his The Imagine Project.

Hancock explained to us that his musical global-mindedness is based in his belief that in finding such common ground, humanity can be brought closer together. We happen to share that belief and think you’ll see it proven throughout this new issue of M Music & Musicians.

Rick Taylor, Editor

Issue 04 Cover Story: Sarah McLachlan Features: Rock At The Movies, Deal Or No Deal?
