At times, his entire multi-decade discography feels like it could have been cut in one long session in any given year. For its part, <em>Up Close<\/em> lacks anything quite as breakneck as \u201cZap\u201d or as hummable as \u201cCliffs of Dover,\u201d but it\u2019s not without memorable moments. \u201cGem\u201d is just that, while Malford Milligan\u2019s vocals are a welcome addition on \u201cBrilliant Room.\u201d The only real misstep is a leaden cover of the Electric Flag\u2019s \u201cTexas\u201d that even guest guitarist Jimmie Vaughan can\u2019t help to toughen up\u2014Johnson\u2019s blues instincts are better experienced peeking through the twists of signature instrumentals like \u201cFatdaddy.\u201d Still, <em>Up Close<\/em> is a welcome return to the soothing territory that is Eric Johnson\u2019s unique sonic home. \u2013Jeff Leven<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ERIC JOHNSON Up Close [Vortexan Music] While it\u2019s been 20 years since Eric Johnson had his closest brush with fame with the landmark Ah Via Musicom, the joyful noise that is his signature remains completely intact.
