Hot off the heels of the breakthrough album, Music for the Masses<\/em>, British synth pop group Depeche Mode embark on the last leg of the 1989 North American tour. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker is on hand to document the trek from New York to California\u2014focusing his lens on the band, its fans, and the minutiae of tour life. The documentary culminates with Depeche Mode\u2019s final performance of the tour at the Pasadena Rose Bowl: June 18, 1988.<\/p>\n

Join <\/strong>Eat|See|Hear Outdoor Movie<\/strong> for a worldwide exclusive screening of this iconic event right back inside the stadium\u2014where it was filmed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Depeche Mode\u00a0wanted to do something special for this event, and they\u2019re re-creating official 101-era merch\u2014for this Friday night, August 25, 2017. There will also be\u00a0Global Spirit Tour<\/em>\u00a0merch for sale, so you can get your gear before the Hollywood Bowl shows. Now you don\u2019t have to say \u201cI wish I still had my shirt from that show\u201d\u2014you can buy\u00a0a new one.<\/p>\n

Richard Blade became a fixture on the American music scene in 1982\u2014when he started as a DJ at KROQ.\u00a0Within a few months, he became the #1 Arbitron-rated radio personality on the West Coast. Richard is now a working DJ-producer-writer-host-v\/o talent-creator. You\u2019ve seen him on TV\/Film and heard him on both SiriusXM and on LA\u2019s JackFM hosting Richard Blade\u2019s Flashback Lunch<\/em>,\u00a0Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n

It is only fitting to have him out to spin great tunes and introduce Depeche Mode: 101<\/em>\u2014as he had a similar role, the introduction part, introducing the band to 65,000 Depeche Mode fans at the original \u201cMusic For The Masses\u201d concert Rose Bowl show\u2014that 101 is based on.<\/p>\n

We talked with Sharon & Jeff Sperber, of the Eat|See|Hear event series, about this special event they are bringing to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Tell us how the idea of the <\/strong>Eat|See|Hear event series <\/strong>got started.
\n<\/strong>Our backgrounds are in music, consumer promotions, experiential marketing and event production. A number of years ago, we were doing a project for Fiat when they were re-launching here in the States, and that involved a pop-up drive-in movie theater in multiple markets. We worked with an audio-visual vendor that was doing an unsuccessful outdoor movie series around Los Angeles. He asked to work with us, and we created the Eat|See|Hear concept\u2014everything from the name to the logo and creative design\u2014to the overall customer experience.<\/p>\n

What would you like to see happen with this series?
\n<\/strong>Our goal has always been to provide Angelenos with an audio-visual experience they cannot get anywhere else\u2014in iconic locations throughout the city. We would love to see the series expand to other markets, in addition to adding more large-scale special events.<\/p>\n

Depeche Mode: 101<\/em><\/strong> Returns to the Rose Bowl seems like a fantastic idea.<\/strong>
\nThank you. This has been on our wish list since we launched the series in 2012, one of those \u201cwouldn\u2019t it be great if\u2026\u201d conversations that we\u2019re bringing to life. For about a year, we\u2019d been trying to find out from whom to license the film, and an acquaintance put us in touch with management. They were excited about the idea and gave us the green light. We are very excited about it. They\u2019re providing us with tickets to give away to one of the Hollywood Bowl shows this fall, as well as CDs, DVDs, autographed 101 vinyl, and they\u2019ll be selling both current Global Spirit Tour<\/em> merch as well as 101-era merch.<\/p>\n

How did you go about involving musical guest DJ Richard Blade?<\/strong>
\nWe asked him, and he said \u2018Yes.\u2019 (Laughs<\/em>) We knew he was in the film, and we work with KROQ, JackFM and other CBS radio stations. Richard does a flashback lunch on JackFM, so they made the formal introduction. Besides, who better to provide pre-show music than Richard?<\/p>\n

Have you always enjoyed music documentaries?<\/strong>
\nMusic is a huge part of our everyday lives, so \u2018Yes,\u2019 music docs are something that we have enjoyed forever. Documentaries in general are a genre that we like to watch on our own time.<\/p>\n

Tell us some moments that have happened at these <\/strong>Eat|See|Hear event series.<\/strong>
\nBeing in Los Angeles and seeing celebs out and about\u2014is kind of a regular thing. Often they are being stalked by photographers, or they\u2019re hiding in a corner in a restaurant and people come up to them looking to take photos. We\u2019re incredibly proud of the fact that we regularly get celebrity attendees at our events. And they\u2019re not bothered by anyone\u2014they blend in and can just be a person. For the last several years we have hosted Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard. Recently, Ed Helms posted a photo on Instagram that he was at our screening of Young Frankenstein<\/em>. At that same event, we had Steve Vai, Brett McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords and Katie Featherston from Paranormal Activity<\/em>. But there were no paps, nobody even noticed them and we love that<\/em>. They get to be regular people enjoying themselves, like the thousands of others in attendance.<\/p>\n

Have you had special guests?<\/strong>
\nOver the years, we have had amazing guests introduce our films: Cary Elwes introduced The Princess Bride<\/em>, director John Avildsen, who passed this year, introduced The Karate Kid<\/em>, and writer\/director Richard Kelly introduced Donnie Darko<\/em>. We were the only event in the world to welcome actor Judd Nelson to introduce a 30th<\/sup> Anniversary screening of The Breakfast Club<\/em>. Before the election in 2016, we did our part of trying to prevent our dystopian future by partnering with Shepard & Amanda Fairey to #MakeAmericaSmartAgain with a very special screening of Idiocracy<\/em>. Director Mike Judge and stars Dax Shepard and Terry Crews were on hand to speak and intro the film. Dax noted that they didn\u2019t have an official premiere with the studio. So 10 years later, this was their official premiere.<\/p>\n

Is there anything else unique?<\/strong>
\nWe are the largest dog-friendly event series in LA. We have been working with Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles for 5 years now and have donated over $30k from our ticket sales to the No Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) initiative\u2014working towards making LA a no-kill city by the end of 2017. We have rescue groups out with adoptable animals each week, and have educated literally thousands of people about this organization. People have adopted dogs and cats they\u2019ve met at our events. It\u2019s incredible to see how we\u2019ve been able to make a difference\u2014educating people about adoption, fostering and volunteering. Additionally, because of this partnership, we are finally going to realize a life-long bucket list dream of being featured in an upcoming Best Friends <\/em>magazine. We were also extremely fortunate last year to have been given a personal, guided tour of the amazing Best Friends Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah by one of the organization\u2019s founders. It was incredibly moving.<\/p>\n

Tell us about some of the up-and-coming bands that perform for you.<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019ve had some that have gone on to perform at Coachella and gain in popularity and success. The Orwells performed our first year in 2012. Chicano Batman played for us in 2015. Jaime Wyatt (Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Top 10 country artists to watch) and TRDMRK (DJ Nu-Mark from Jurassic 5 & Slimkid3 formerly of The Pharcyde) played last year. All these great acts are going places and we had them here.<\/p>\n

Are there other Music-related events you\u2019d like to try?
\n<\/strong>Yes there are. We have an amazing concept ready to go featuring a world renowned artist re-imagining an iconic score to an iconic film\u2014to be performed live. We are trying to work out scheduling, contractual obligations and patron\/sponsor for it, as we speak. Hopefully this event will lead to more of those opportunities. We\u2019d really <\/em>like to do something with U2 and Rattle and Hum<\/em>, if they (or anyone that works with them) are reading this. (Laughs<\/em>)
\nWhat is it about Los Angeles that continues to inspire you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have the greatest weather in the world with never-ending opportunities to enjoy life outdoors. From the beaches to the mountains to the high desert, LA is always throwing something new at us. The LA food, music and arts scene\u2014all amazing. But ultimately, it\u2019s the gigantic melting pot of cultures and people that make us thrilled to be living and working in LA. The diversity of it all\u2014is fantastic.<\/p>\n

Best advice someone has given you.<\/strong>
\nSharon: Instead of seeing walls, look for windows of opportunity.
\nJeff: Live in hope, die in despair.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next?<\/strong>
\nFront Porch Cinema on the Santa Monica Pier is a free, 5-week outdoor movie series that we produce for the Pier\u2014on the Pier on Friday nights. And after that\u2014vacation. (Laughs<\/em>)<\/p>\n
