The trio lets it fly right from the get-go: Opening track \u201cThe Radio Tower Has a Beating Heart\u201d is a shimmering, explosive number. For the most part, the songs aspire to an almost epic sound. (We are talking about a group of guys who have offered up avant-jazz renditions of bombastic rock numbers such as Rush\u2019s \u201cTom Sawyer\u201d and Bowie\u2019s \u201cLife on Mars.\u201d) The piano melody of \u201cNever Stop\u201d leaves a lasting impression, and \u201cYou Are\u201d features a layered piano riff that could have been culled from a Radiohead tune. \u201cPeople Like You\u201d and \u201cSnowball\u201d are beautiful ballads that feature Keith Jarrett-like piano melodies, suggesting these guys can leave their cover-band days behind. \u2013Jeff Niesel<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE BAD PLUS Never Stop [E1 Entertainment] On its first album of all original material, the Bad Plus\u2014bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King\u2014makes the transition from gimmicky hipster jazz act to legitimate contenders.
