He discovered the key to his new <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Rain on the City<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> album when he brought in producer Richard McLaurin as his collaborator. \u201cYou learn some lessons and go down one hallway, find a dead end, and turn around and head down another hallway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Chasing down those possible directions led Johnston to cover a lot of territory\u2014literally. The Kansas native spent time living in Nashville and Austin before returning to his longtime home of New York City. \u201cI needed to learn more about the music world that I\u2019m living in, and those two towns are the two you need to know,\u201d says Johnston, who enjoyed modern-rock radio success in the \u201990s with songs like \u201cBad Reputation\u201d and \u201cThis Perfect World.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Recorded in Nashville, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Rain on the City<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> benefited from the discipline of having an outside producer. \u201cRichard was the guy sitting there, twiddling his thumbs waiting for the songs to be finished\u2014which I don\u2019t like to do,\u201d he says. \u201cI really would love to have a record that\u2019s fully written before going into the studio. Maybe it\u2019s not destined to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">The producer also pushed Johnston toward a recording process featuring a combination of live adrenaline and studio craft. \u201cWe did live band tracks with the drums, bass and guitars,\u201d says Johnston. \u201cBut Richard said, \u2018Freedy, I know you don\u2019t want to do this, but I want you to overdub your vocals, because it\u2019s going to sound more rock.\u2019 So I went with it, and I agree! I like hearing really good, well-done vocals\u2014and you don\u2019t always get that with a live vocal.\u201d Also helping the album to sound more rock was bringing in what Johnston calls his \u201cLudwig John Bonham kit with the 26-inch kick drum. That was the key to Bonham\u2019s sound, and that\u2019s what you hear on this record.\u201d As the album\u2019s principal guitarist, Johnston says he used his trusted Fender Jazzmaster electric and Martin D-28 acoustic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">After such a long spell out of the public eye, Johnston is eager to share his new tunes with listeners. \u201cIt\u2019s a kind of group therapy,\u201d he says. \u201cThe best thing about the job is the person coming up to you after the show and saying, \u2018Man, that one song of yours got me through a tough part of my life.\u2019 That\u2019s a pretty good job, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u2013Bob Cannon<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Jan\/Feb Issue of <em>M Music &amp; Musicians<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FREEDY JOHNSTON After eight years, he\u2019s back thanks to some discipline in the studio Freedy Johnston didn\u2019t mean to spend eight years between albums. \u201cI tried to make it a couple times on my own, and it didn\u2019t work out for various reasons,\u201d says the singer-songwriter.
