The hit country trio takes control of its\u00a0own chemistry<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we could combine all our\u00a0talent into one person, we\u2019d be one hell of a good songwriter,\u201d jokes Charles Kelley, one-third of the Grammy-nominated country trio Lady Antebellum.<\/p>\n

Kelley and bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood are doing just fine as it is. After finding fame with 2007\u2019s platinum-certified self-titled album, the Nashville-based group returns with its much-anticipated follow-up, Need You Now.<\/em> The first single and title track\u2014which recently spent five consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s country singles chart\u2014is about the romantic longing and regret that creeps in late at night after a few drinks. The song shows a more adventurous side of the trio, one that takes advantage of the chemistry between Kelley and co-lead singer Scott.<\/p>\n

Kelley believes the success of the first album\u2019s hit \u201cI Run to You\u201d proved that the group could connect with fans on a more mature level than its record company had expected. \u201cIf \u2018I Run to You\u2019 hadn\u2019t worked, I don\u2019t think the label or anybody would have felt confident about putting out \u2018Need You Now,\u2019\u201d he says, sitting in his manager\u2019s Nashville office. \u201cBut because it did, people responded to the [vocal] back-and-forth,\u00a0the honest lyrics and taking some chances with production.\u201d<\/p>\n

And now there\u2019s no turning back. Following their debut\u2019s breakout status, Kelley, Scott and Haywood decided to take the production reins on Need You Now<\/em> alongside behind-the-boards veteran Paul Worley. \u201cWe wanted to take more of a role on this one,\u201d Kelley says.<\/p>\n

In doing so, the band has put together a set that builds on its debut without duplicating it. \u201cThere\u2019s still some stuff that\u2019s very reminiscent of [our hits] \u2018Love Don\u2019t Live Here\u2019 and \u2018Lookin\u2019 for a Good Time,\u2019\u201d explains Kelley. \u201cBut this album is more about getting creative and taking chances.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trio co-wrote seven of the album\u2019s 11 tracks with such noted Music City tunesmiths as Rivers Rutherford, Monty Powell and Craig Wiseman. Kelley (whose older brother is the well-known singer and songwriter Josh Kelley) points out that the group\u2019s original songs typically start with an idea from its least high-profile member, guitarist and harmony singer Haywood. \u201cHe\u2019ll riff and Hillary and I<\/p>\n

will melodically come up with a vocal melody over it,\u201d Kelley says. \u201cWhen we get stuck, he\u2019ll come in and chime in as far as a vocal melody. He knows exactly where I\u2019ll want to go. It\u2019s almost like he\u2019s in my brain. I don\u2019t like working without either of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
